This is it, the "HOLY GRAIL" of the vintage dirt bike world, a museum quality Husqvarna 400 Cross fully restored to original condition. This particular 400 Cross was indeed on display in the National Motorcycle Museum, in Anamosa, Iowa. She will come complete with show board, banner, hang tags from the museum, documentation, and a new DVD of "On Any Sunday". Although this show piece has not been ridden for more than a few hundred feet, since the full restoration, this brutish beauty starts, runs, and shifts as she should. If you are reading this listing then you are probably already a Husqvarna fan and you know all about this venerable motorcycle. But, for those of you that are not familiar with the 400 Cross, here is a bit of information: Husqvarna motorcycles earned early prominence in America as the ambassadors of a new sport being imported from Europe; Motocross. The beautiful Swedish motorcycles, with their distinctive chrome gas tank patch, gained significant ground when they dominated the big movie screen in Bruce Brown’s 1971 classic motorcycle documentary, "On Any Sunday", considered by many to be the best motorcycle film ever made. Not only was Bengt Aberg riding one, in a series of magical displays of riding caught in slow-motion, but the film’s stars, mega mogul Steve McQueen and rider extraordinaire, Malcolm Smith, rode the red bikes throughout the movie in a wide variety of competition settings. The movie culminated with the now famous "play riding on the beach" scene at the end of the film. From that point on everyone(including me) wanted a Husqvarna 400 Cross dirt bike. The actual Husqvarna 400 Cross, ridden by Steve McQueen in the movie, sold at the Bonham's Auction for $144,500 in May of 2011.Today, most all of the remaining 400 Cross models from 1969-1971 are sitting in museums, private collections, exotic mancaves, living rooms, or as a focal point in the top floor penthouse office suite of a successful investment banker. This particular 400 Cross is currently the only one, that we are aware of, available for acqusition in the United States today. We are planning to load this beauty in the bed of our vintage (also listed on our website) 1950 Chevy model 3100 pickup truck (Steve McQueen owned a similar pickup) and hit some local car shows this season. If you would like to take home two trophies, from your next show event, then buy both and you will be all set.
As an aside, I personally owned a 1970 Husqvarna 400 Cross, when I was 17 years old, in 1970. I lived in Burbank, CA and purchased it from a doctor in neighboring Pasadena, CA. He rode that Husky twice and determined that it was too much motorcycle for his skill level. It was in "as new" condition, he was asking $1050 for it and we settled upon $950. I rode and raced it for 2 years and then sold it for $900, reveling in the fact that it had only cost me $50 to own that motorcycle for 2 whole years. Times have certainly changed!
